America - An Upside Down Nation
When
I was a little boy we used to play on the “Jungle Gym.” Actually, ‘us’ less sophisticated types
called it the “Monkey Bars.” The only
reason it was called “Monkey Bars” was because we (little boys) would get on
the bars and act like monkeys. We would
hand upside down from our knees and our feet.
As I remember, this was a lot of fun, well, at least for a little bit.
Physiologically,
it is not a good idea to hang upside down for an extended period of time. Dr. Ashley Grossman tells us that to hang
upside down for an extended period of time, “Fluid will start to ease out of
your blood vessels, you can’t get oxygen, and the lungs will become rather
stiff so you will get breathless.” By
the way, to remain in that position can lead to a stroke or death.
Another problem which develops is with
your circulatory system. The heart uses
gravity to perfuse your lower extremities so it doesn’t use much pressure to
send blood to your feet. At the same
time, the heart uses extra pressure to perfuse the brain because it is working
against gravity. To hang upside down for
an extended period of time can cause some disastrous results.
To look around this country is to
realize there is something out of sync, out of ‘whack’ and even upside
down. Things in this nation have
drastically changed in the last half century.
To read about the nation of Judah in
Isaiah 5 should sober the nation of America.
Through the prophet, Isaiah, God issues this warning, “Woe to those who
call evil good and good evil. Woe to
those who call darkness light and light darkness.” Certainly and sadly, in this last 50 years we
have seen this culture change their views on right, wrong, good, bad, as well
as moral and immoral. In large measure,
we have dismissed God from our public life and for many, from our personal
lives.
The societal results are devastating.
Pregnancy out of wedlock, living together out of wedlock, abortions, school
shootings, and violent crimes, are but a few of the ungodly results we are
living with. Once again we can look to
Isaiah 5 and read God’s response to His people-Judah, “Now I will tell you what I am about to do to My vineyard: I will remove
its hedge, and it will be consumed; I will tear down its wall, and it will be
trampled. I will make it a wasteland. It
will not be pruned or weeded; thorns and briers will grow up. I will also give orders to the clouds that
rain should not fall on it.”
The same God who blessed this nation
in her founding, the same God whose words are written on almost every national
monument, and the same God who sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for our
sins, is the same God who can take an upside down nation and turn her
right-side up.
He will do this, if only we meet HIS
requirements. (2 Chronicles 7:14) He is the answer for every need we face.
