An Anchor of Truth in a Sea of Uncertainty
The Anchor in the Shift: Finding Certainty in a Changing World
We live in a culture
that moves at the speed of emotion. Today, personal feelings are frequently
elevated above objective facts, and what is considered "true" can
shift from one day to the next. Navigating this landscape can feel like walking
on quicksand. When the cultural ground constantly moves beneath our feet, it is
natural to feel disoriented, anxious, or disconnected.
Yet today, our culture moment presents a profound opportunity. Instead of reacting with frustration (which is our first reaction),
we can view this shift as an invitation to anchor ourselves in something that
never moves.
As a child, Dad and I would ocassionally fish in the Pearl River. When we rented a little boat, we made sure we had an anchor because without it, we would be at the mercy of the river. In today's culture, we need to drop anchor in objective truth not emotional opinion.
Living by feelings
alone is exhausting. Emotions are vital parts of our lives and experience, but
they were never designed to be our foundation. They change with our
circumstances, our energy levels, and the cultural trends around us. Building
a life on shifting cultural narratives is like building a house on sand. Jesus
ended His famous sermon with a picture of the results of doing such.
The ancient
scriptures captured this exact reality thousands of years ago. The prophet
Isaiah observed the fleeting nature of the world around him and wrote:
"The grass
withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever." (Isaiah 40:8)
This verse is not a
condemnation; it is a comforting reality check. It reminds us that while
cultural seasons, human opinions, and emotional trends naturally bloom and
wither, there is a bedrock of truth that remains completely unaffected by time.
God's Word provides the stable, unyielding foundation that our hearts crave
when the world feels unpredictable.
Truth is not just a
set of rules or abstract concepts. In the Christian faith, truth is a person.
Jesus did not just point to the truth; He embodied it. In a world where values
and definitions are constantly rewritten, Jesus offers the ultimate contrast:
absolute consistency.
The writer of
Hebrews delivers this powerful assurance:
"Jesus Christ,
the same yesterday, today, and forever." (Hebrews 13:8)
Think about the
immense peace found in that statement. The Jesus who showed radical grace,
perfect justice, and unwavering love two thousand years ago is the exact same
Jesus who walks with us today. He does not change His mind based on cultural
consensus. His character does not fluctuate based on human emotion. He is the
steady anchor in the middle of our cultural storm. He can be counted on no
matter what life throws at us.
Embracing objective
truth is not about winning arguments or looking down on the world. True active
listening—and true love—requires us to offer something stable to a culture that
is drifting. When we anchor ourselves in Jesus, we find the security needed to
love others deeply, listen without judgment, and stand firm in our convictions.
If you are tired of
trying to keep up with a constantly changing cultural landscape, Jesus invites
you to rest in His consistency. You do not have to be managed by the volatility
of the moment.
Turn your eyes to
the One who is completely dependable. Let His unchanging Word guide your steps,
let His steady love calm your anxieties, and let His eternal truth be the
foundation of your life. In a changing world, He is the one reality you can
always count on.
